Fresh analysis reveals that individuals who stop using popular GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide can put back on lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional diet and exercise programs.
Findings released in a prominent health publication points out that while overweight individuals can lose a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Users buying such medications should be informed of the risk of quick weight regain when the therapy is stopped," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain suggests a return to starting weight in about one and a half years.
Analyzing Therapies
The research, which looked at 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the results of these new drugs with other pills.
The team note that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally experience a less rapid weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
The Reason for the Rapid Regain
Experts suggest the mechanism of the drugs accounts for the accelerated weight return.
These medications mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could diminish sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Condition?
The NHS advise the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
Many experts contend that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy is often long-term.
This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "emphasize the persistent character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Experiences
People who have discontinued the medication describe a sudden resurgence of appetite.
"I experienced a trigger flipping and I was suddenly starving," said a patient.
The struggle is worsened if users have not established lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Significant Interest
Survey data show that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand being substantial.
- Use is more common among females than males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
In conclusion, clinicians emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and maintained weight loss likely depends on combined lifestyle support.
